The idea for the Athos coffee-table came from a children's handcraft project where four matchboxes were glued together to create a table for a dollhouse. The colors and shapes of the mosaic panels created by Athos Bulcao served as the main inspiration for the design. The result is a stunning piece of furniture that not only adds a touch of art to your living space but also provides hidden storage.
What sets the Athos coffee-table apart is its hidden drawers, which are cleverly disguised within the mosaic pattern. When closed, the drawers are virtually invisible, giving the table a seamless and cohesive look. The drawers are accessed by pulling on one side of the low relief carving, revealing a hidden storage space.
The Athos coffee-table is made using high-quality materials and precise craftsmanship. The table is constructed from lacquered MDF, with the corners and frontal part of the drawers precisely cut at 45 degrees for a perfect fit. The drawers run smoothly on strong slides with automatic closing, ensuring ease of use and durability.
Designed by Patricia Salgado and her team, including José Maria Passarelli Filho and Denilson Jose da Silva, the Athos coffee-table is the result of extensive research into the work of Athos Bulcao. Known for his mosaic panels in buildings designed by renowned architects such as Niemeyer and Lucio Costa, Athos Bulcao's work brings beauty and grace to the concrete architecture of Brazil.
The development of the Athos coffee-table was not without its challenges. The design team had to carefully study the shapes and composition of Athos Bulcao's mosaic panels to bring their beauty into the inner space of the coffee-table. Additionally, they had to optimize the use of the MDF slab to minimize waste of material.
The first sketches of the Athos coffee-table were made in January 2013, and throughout that year, the design team experimented with different compositions of colors and shapes. The first prototype of the table is nearing completion, showcasing the culmination of years of research and design.
The Athos coffee-table has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2014, which honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This prestigious award acknowledges the Athos coffee-table for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world.
Bring the beauty of Brazilian modernist art into your living space with the Athos coffee-table. Its hidden drawers and stunning mosaic design make it a functional and artistic addition to any home.
